Throat Cancer

Cancer of the throat is the cancer of our voice box (larynx) and its surrounding tissues. The most prominent parts of our throat are the larynx and the pharynx but most cancers arise from the former, accounting to nearly half of all throat cancer cases in America.

Throat cancer survival rate for most patients is quite high because of the advancement in medical technology, detecting the cancer as early as stage 1. However, this isn't always the case of most patients because there are those whose over-all health status isn't exactly healthy enough to fight off the cancer as it ensues.

At stages 0 and 1, the throat cancer survival rate is pretty high at 90 to 99 percent in a 5-year time period. The tumor at these stages isn't exactly that big and it may be easily removed through surgery and some adjuvant chemotherapy if needed.

The rate of survival will then decrease at the next stages (2 and 3) with the highest rate at 75% and the lowest at 60% for the same time period. At the later phase of stage 3, the throat cancer survival rate will drastically decrease at 50%.

Once the patient reaches the 4th stage of cancer, expect a much more decreased survival percentage. During this stage, the cancer has already metastasized towards the nearest vital organs (brain, heart, lungs, etc). In some cases, the cause of death may not be the cancer of the throat but instead the cancer that has spread to the other body parts, especially if it has reached the spinal cord and the brain. The survival percentage of stage 4 is substantially lower at 20-30%.

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid function is usually not affected in most thyroid cancers. Therefore the patients have thyroid cancer symptoms but show no indication of low thyroid (hypothyroidism symptoms) as well as high thyroid (hyperthyroidism symptoms.)

Skin Cancer


Skin cancer is one of the commonest forms of this malignant disease. It is commonly caused by exposure of the skin to the sun. Before we talk about the 3 leading causes of skin cancer, let's take a look at the different types of skin cells and their basic functions.

The top layer of the skin is called epidermis, and it has 3 major types of cells squamous, basal and melanocytes. Squamous cells line the inside of the skin, just below the visible outer layer. 

Below the layer of squamous cells are basal cells, which act as generators of new cells. The final layer of the epidermis consists of melanocytes. These cells produce melanin, a coloring pigment that determines your skin tone. This pigment also plays a vital role in protecting the skin from the harmful UV rays.

1. UV Radiations

A major cause of skin cancer is the ultra violet radiations from the sun. It is caused either due to long-term or short-term exposure to these harmful rays. The 2 common types of UV rays that affect the skin are UVA and UVB. Both the types of sun rays are known to be cancer causing. How do these rays work on damaging the skin cells? They go straight for the jugular - here, the DNA of the skin cells. Once the cell's code is damaged, the cells tend to multiply quickly, leading to cancerous growth. It is not just the sun's UV rays are harmful, even radiations from tanning bed and solarium have been found to be carcinogenic.

2. Chemicals

Many chemicals have also been found to cause non-melanoma cancer. Some of the harmful chemicals are arsenic, shale oil, petroleum products, soot, pitch, nicotine, coal-tar and creosote. People working in chemical factories or leather tanneries may be exposed to one or many of these carcinogenic chemicals. Their work conditions make their skin more vulnerable to the UV rays and to skin cancer.

3. Skin Conditions


Those suffering from skin conditions are prone to this form of cancer as the skin cells are already weak and can be easily affected by the carcinogens. Psoriasis, solar keratosis, Gorlin's syndrome, Xeroderma pigmentosum and eczema could increase the risk of skin cancer. These skin conditions do not by themselves cause skin cancer, but could hasten the formation of cancerous cells as they weaken the skin cells and reduce their natural ability to repair and renew.

Rectal Cancer

The colon is a part of the digestive tract that connects the stomach and small intestine to the anus. The terminal portion of this colon is called the rectum, spanning approximately 12cm in length. About 20% of all cancers that occur in the colon arise in this rectum.

Bleeding is the most common symptom associated with rectal cancer, occurring in up to 60% of patients. Other frequent symptoms include change in bowel habit, and abdominal pain.

The diagnosis of rectal cancer usually involves colonoscopy, an examination of the colon using an instrument called colonoscope that enables an evaluation of the entire inner lining of the colon including the rectum. Once the diagnosis of cancer is made, the extent of the disease is often determined using a radiologic examination called CT scan. It allows an initial assessment of the extent of spread of cancer. In addition, an endoscopic ultrasound may be helpful in assessing the local spread of cancer. At the same time, routine blood tests including complete blood count (CBC), liver function tests, and a tumor marker called CEA are usually obtained during the initial evaluation.

There are 4 stages of rectal cancer. Rectal cancer is defined as Stage 1, if the cancer tissue is confined to the lining of the rectum. In Stage 2 cancer, the cancer tissue has invaded the layers of rectal wall, and may have invaded nearby organs such as bladder or uterus. In Stage 3 rectal cancer, the cancer tissue has spread to nearby lymph nodes, tiny bean shaped glands of lymphatic system. In Stage 4 cancer, the cancer has spread to other organs such as liver or lung.



The staging of rectal cancer is important since the prognosis of affected individual is highly dependent on the staging of cancer. For example, patients diagnosed with Stage 1 rectal cancer have overall 5-year survival rate of 74%. On the other hand, those diagnosed with stage 4 cancer can only expect 6% survival rate at 5 year.

The treatment of rectal cancer often involves combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Because of the complex anatomy of anal sphincter, there are various surgical techniques that may be utilized to preserve the anal sphincteric function. In addition, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often administered to shrink the tumor, prior to performing the surgery.

Generally, the best initial approach is for men to learn about the risk factors; men who find themselves with a near-average risk of developing prostate cancer - be it due to advanced age, racial background, diet, and/or family history - must consider making choices in daily life, that is, exercising, having healthier meals, among many other life-changing selections.

Although there is not much substantial evidence to support them, some studies have pointed out that the choice of a diet that is low in saturated fat and high in fruits and vegetables is ideal for maintaining a healthy prostate. 

From a nutritional point of view, this is no surprise, for this type of diet is healthy for the human body in general, and has repeatedly proven to assist men in controlling their weight, and consequently the heart and the cardiovascular system. 

In studies that considered fat association with the risk of having prostate cancer, animal fats were found to be more associated to prostate cancer cases than plant-derived fats. Furthermore, some fish are also associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, more specifically those that have fatty acids (such as the omega-3) that healthily replace saturated fat in any diet. 

Other studies showed that diets containing olive oil, green tea and many vegetables, such as (cooked) tomatoes, soybeans and other legumes, might be linked to a lower risk of prostate cancer, particularly in advanced cases.


Moreover, a physician must always accompany any supplementation to the diet; for example, calcium in excess has been linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer. Men in general must watch out to not exaggerate on their calcium consumption; either in daily meals, or in vitamin supplementation itself, the daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg. 

Also, consumption of any multivitamin is not recommended, since a man on a diet full of vegetables and fruits most likely will never need vitamin supplementation. Tomatoes have also been studied since they are well known to contain lycopenes, which are powerful antioxidants that may help diminishing or extinguishing cell damage, and such studies have shown a decrease in prostate cancer. 

Other antioxidant vitamins, such as selenium and vitamin E have also been the target of many studies, but with no real success or closure to the topic. 

However, eating all the vegetables and fruits in the world will not even come close to removing completely a man's risk of having cancer in his prostate. 

Therefore, men who are currently in one of the risk groups should consider not only these improvements in daily life, but also - and most importantly - should consult a specialized doctor to discuss whether having yearly digital rectal examinations, prostate biopsies, ultrasounds and/or prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood tests are the recommended choices for each individual case. 

Furthermore, a doctor must also be consulted in cases of stress, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and depression, since treating these conditions is of utmost importance for improving survival rates of prostate cancer patients.

Testicular cancer

Smoking marijuana may increase men's risk of testicular cancer, a new study from the University of Southern California (USC) finds.



This new study discovered that men who smoked weed or marijuana were twice as likely as men who had not to get a dangerous form of the disease. If you don't know, testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in men under the age of 45. It's also on the rise, says Scott Eggener, MD, a cancer surgeon at the University of Chicago who has studied the trend.

There was a study released earlier this year that showed marijuana use is up, with 1 in 10 teens now smoking marijuana at least 20 times a month. The USC study compared a group of 163 men with testicular cancer to a similar group of 292 healthy men who were questioned about recreational drug use. The researchers of California discovered those men who used marijuana had a two-fold increased risk of testicular tumors and, more specifically, tend to affect younger men and are difficult to diagnose, requiring chemotherapy.

I know the doubled risk of cancer may sound quite scary, but researchers caution that men who have smoked marijuana shouldn't panic. This is because the odds that a man will get testicular cancer are pretty small to begin with. About 1 in 400 men are diagnosed by the time they are 35, according to the National Cancer Institute. Even if you double that risk to 1 in 200, any one man's chances are still pretty slim. The study also does not prove that marijuana causes cancer.

On the other hand, there was a negative effect in this study between a history of cocaine use and these types of cancer. Victoria Cortessis, MSPH, PhD, assistant professor of preventive medicine, offers an explanation in the fact that cocaine destroys sperm-producing germ cells, as it is known to occur in animals. Cocaine may lead to infertility but it may also kill cells, including cancerous ones, before they even develop cancer, which would explain the lower incidence of testicular tumors among cocaine users. This is most likely the first study to reveal such an association.

Doctors still don't know why marijuana may increase the risk of certain types of cancer.The active ingredient in marijuana, THC, may interfere with normal hormone signaling between the brain and the testicles. Further research will be conducted that will look at all the processes.

The bottom line, explains Stephen M. Schwartz, PhD, MPH, an epidemiologist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, is that marijuana may not be as harmless a drug as some people think. I have never heard of anyone dying from marijuana use or overdosing so I always thought that marijuana can't be that harmful. Sure enough you will get the "munchies" or laugh uncontrollably, but that's all I knew. As a matter of fact, many individuals have found marijuana to help them with stress and certain pains.

Pancreatic Cancer

The pancreas is a gland that is located in the upper abdomen behind the stomach just in front of the spine. It is divided into three main parts, consisting of a head, body and tail, which weighs between 60-140 grams, and measures about 15 cm x 4 cm. Like many of the bodies other organs it is also prone to being infected by cancer; however, unlike certain other cancers it is extremely difficult to detect.

The pancreas is a pear-shaped gland behind the stomach and the liver. Cancer in this gland is rare but notably deadly. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer are only seen during the advanced stage of the disease. Moreover, these symptoms are vague and can be easily overlooked or mistook as another ailment. Unknown to some people, the cancer cells have already spread in their system. This is what makes pancreatic cancer one of the most fatal cancers.

There are some few cases where early signs of pancreatic cancer have been observed. Studies revealed that only 4% of the subjects composed of pancreatic cancer patients observed sudden disgust in food they used to like months before actual diagnosis. Only a percentage suffered pancreatitis and about 5% experienced loss of appetite.

Advanced cancer on this gland is characterized by jaundice or the yellowing of the eyes and the skin. The discoloration is caused by excessive bilirubin in the blood which occurs when a tumor blocks the bile ducts. With the blockage of the ducts, there will also be changes in bowel habits. In addition, stools may lose their normal brown color and turn gray. Urine is also darker. Presence of fat in the stools, or steatorrhea, can also be observed. These fatty stools have strong foul odor and tend to float more.

Apart from jaundice, another symptom of pancreatic cancer concerning the skin is itch. Itchy skin is most often attributed to dermatological problems; however, itch coupled with jaundice may already entail severe illness.

If bilirubin increases, insulin in the blood may decrease causing diabetes. Pancreas secretes insulin and though diabetes can be linked to many other disorders, acquiring onset diabetes is suspicious.

Sudden weight loss can also signify pancreatic cancer. Many would appreciate losing weight, but this can actually lead to more sever illnesses. Together with weight loss, abdominal pains are one of the first symptoms of pancreatic cancer. The pains may occur three hours after eating and even when simply lying down. These pains will be more extensive as the tumor grows bigger. In addition, the abdomen may also swell or bloat.

If the disease is left disregarded, other symptoms will also surface. Vomiting, loss of appetite and malaise are signs common to numerous ailments. But the more common symptoms are, the more they should be taken seriously. It is still best to be sure.


For rare pancreatic cancer involving islet cell tumors, other indications included are heavy sweating, facial flushing, reflux and excessive thirst. Islet cell tumors invade the pancreatic cells that are directly producing insulin. This will trigger overproduction of insulin and other hormones and may induce dizziness, chills and recurrent diarrhoea.
